Massimo Stanzione
(Frattamaggiore, 1585 - Napoli, 1656)

Praying Madonna

Oil painting on canvas
cm. 76x62,5
"Unpublished, the painting, due to its formal quality and pictorial rendering, belongs with certainty to Massimo Stanzione towards the middle of the third decade of the century, in a phase during which the painter, trained in the late-mannerist area, had experimented with solutions aimed at reconciling aspects of the "reformed" naturalism of some French in Rome (in particular of Simon Vouet before 1620) with the need for formal compositional clarity of a classicist matrix. " Extract from the profile of Prof. Nicola Spinosa.
