“The Blackbird” is one of D'Anna's most significant collages, where the blackbird, always considered a great communicator, symbolizes communication itself, which in many cases can be more devastating than a cannon shot.
The bird's mouth takes on the appearance of a cannon that shoots out words and “Communication, advertising and progress”.
It is no coincidence that the artist chose for this collage a satirical weekly that was printed in France, in Paris, due to censorship problems and then distributed in Italy.
In this work, collage becomes a pictorial language.
D'Anna used the collage technique throughout his artistic career, and with one collage in particular, “Lettrice futurista” (Futurist Reader), in 1935, in Paris, D'Anna won the prize for best Italian artist.
The work has been archived at the Historical Archive of Sicilian Futurists, curated by Diomedea in collaboration with Professor Anna Maria Ruta.
