Saber Mod.1888 of the Eritrean Campaign

Italian Officer's sabre, bears on the right heel an ancient punched inscription "Africa/Sped. San/Marzano/Camp.1887", on the opposite number "81", probable inventory reference of an ancient collection; the weapon lacks its scabbard, it is in good condition, albeit with signs of actual use and an honest period patina; very interesting

The expedition led by General Alessandro Asinari of San Marzano  between 1887 and 1888 aimed at restoring Italian prestige after the defeat at Dogali, led to the occupation of Saati and other modest territorial occupations, moreover without a major commitment of troops and materials and was therefore, overall, considered a success
